Securing the final position in the initial final field of 18 and offered an exceptional chance of success from barrier 3, with a race-low 52kgs and Joao ‘Magic Man’ Moreira booked for the ride, Gris Caro became the first 2014 Caulfield Cup scratching on Thursday after pulling up sore following trackwork.

Returning to the track in strong form this year, Gris Caro won the Group 3 Naturalism Stakes (2000m) in impressive fashion on September 20th and has been replaced by classy Turnbull Stakes (2000m) third placegetter Brambles, who will be partnered by jockey Luke Nolen and will carry just 53.5kgs.

Charging home to finish an agonizingly close second in the 2013 edition of the Caulfield Cup, international raider Dandino became the second scratching from the 2014 Caulfield Cup final field after also pulling up lame following work.

Understandably disappointed the leading chance will not take his position in the Caulfield Cup final field, managing owner Darren Dance said he is not sure the Dansili gelding will be ready his major target; the 2014 Melbourne Cup.

“We don’t know if he has knocked himself or what he has done, but he certainly won’t be able to run on Saturday,” Dance told TVN.

“I don’t know, but experience tells me once you have an issue like this, you can’t fix it quickly,” He added of a Melbourne Cup appearance.

Finishing an impressive third in the Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m) last time out, Araldo replaces Dandino in the Caulfield Cup final field and has been confirmed to be partnered by Craig Williams.

Rumoured to be harbouring a niggling injury of his own, Bande was inspected and subsequently ruled out of the 2014 Caulfield Cup following a veterinary examinational on Friday morning and is also on the verge of missing the Melbourne Cup.

In what was a particularly drawn out process, Bande was officially inspected at 8:40am but was not scratched from the Caulfield Cup final field until around 45 minutes later as the Japanese stayer’s connections were reported to have unsuccessfully argued the issue was something they had been managing.

“It was a very straightforward veterinary decision,” Racing Victoria vet Brian Stewart told TVN of the tendon issue.

“It was hot and painful.”

Eight-year-old mare Unchain My Heart has been confirmed to replace Bande in the 2014 Caulfield Cup final field, offering trainer David Hayes the chance to secure a third victory in the feature event.

Returning to racing in exceptional form this time in, one of just three mares confirmed in the initial Caulfield Cup final field Dear Demi became the latest scratching at lunch time on Friday with a throat infection.

Understandably pleased with the Dehere mare’s form leading into the 2014 Caulfield Cup, trainer Clarry Conners told TVN the five-year-old had been struck with a cough for the last few days and had not responded to treatment.

“She had a little bit of a cough, we treated her and thought she might come good but she hasn’t improved,” Conners said.

“If anything she has got worse today.

“I had the stable vet look over her and Singo’s (owner John Singleton) vet came and looked at her too and we all agreed that realistically she shouldn’t run.

“It is disappointing because a lot of work has gone in to getting to this point.

“Many, many man hours and then you have something like this happen 24 hours out from the race.”

Contesting just one race in Australia so far, English raider Renew has been confirmed to replace Dear Demi in the 2014 Caulfield Cup final field.
