Waller Confident in Form of Hawkspur Ahead of 2014 Caulfield Cup

October 16th, 2014

Pleased with the building form of the Group 1 winner in the lead-up to this weekend’s feature race, trainer Chris Waller is confident of a far-better result for classy stayer Hawkspur in the 2014 edition of the Caulfield Cup following a luckless appearance in the 2400m race last year.

Jumping from the gates well in the 2013 Caulfield Cup, Hawkspur settled in prime position on the heels of the race’s early leaders and while appearing to be in prime position for a successful final straight sprint, was unlucky to be squeezed out and blocked for a run and eventually finished seventh.

Believing his current form to be very similar to that displayed in the lead-up to the 2013 Caulfield Cup, Waller told Racing Victoria he is confident the addition of champion jockey Damien Oliver to the saddle and an ideal barrier draw will mean the difference in success in the 2014 Caulfield Cup.

“He had no luck last year,” Waller said.

“We watched the replay about 20 times this week and he went terrific.

“This is his distance, this is his race. He races better in the first half of the field than he ever does in the back half of the field, so let’s make it happen.”

A Group 1 winner over the distance having taken out the 2013 edition of the Queensland Derby, Hawkspur has returned to racing in competitive form this season; winning the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) and finishing a credible fourth in the Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m) most notably over five appearances.

Breaking through for a maiden Group 1 victory when taking out The Metropolitan (2400m) at Royal Randwick on October 4th, Waller is confident one of his other four runners, Junoob, is primed for back-to-back success at the highest level of Australian racing.

“He’s peaking for Saturday’s race, he’s coming off the back of a Group 1 win last start, albeit that might be lesser grade,” Waller added.
