Newitt Thrilled With Seismos Ahead of 2014 Caulfield Cup

October 16th, 2014

Yet to appear on an Australian racing track competitively, jockey Craig Newitt is confident of a successful first-up performance from classy international Seismos in this weekend’s featured Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) following a strong piece of work on Thursday morning.

Securing a commendable total of seven wins and five minor places from 24 competitive starts so far, Seismos contested events in Germany, France, Great Britain, the Middle-East, Canada and Hong Kong on his way to the 2014 Caulfield Cup and will carry winning form into Saturday’s feature race after taking out the Group 3 Geoffrey Freer Stakes (2670m) most recently on August 16th.

Fitted with a set of winkers for the Werribee work, Newitt told TVN he was thrilled with the feel offered up by the Dalakhani gelding and is confident all signs point towards a successful partnership in the 2014 Caulfield Cup.

“He was sensational today. He was a different horse,” Newitt said.

“All he wanted to do was run – he’s bouncing.

“On his work this morning he might be able to take up a pretty handy spot.

“He came off the track pig-rooting, squealing. He’s pretty close as good as they can get him.”

Arguably hitting career-best form over the 2013 racing calendar, Seismos finished fifth in the Group 2 Grosser Preis Der Badischen Unternehmer (2212m) in May and continued to build in form and class on his way to a maiden Group 1 victory in the Grosser Preis von Bayern (2413m) in August; progressing to third place in the Group 1 Canadian International Stakes (2413m) at Woodbine before a luckless run in the Group 1 Hong Kong Vase (2400m) at Sha Tin.

Charging home to win a minor over 2300m in Germany first-up this year, the gelding out of Sasuela finished a credible sixth in the Group 3 Henry II Stakes (3290m) on May 29th and fourth in the Group 2 Prix Maurice De Nieuil (2800m) before taking out the Group 3 Geoffrey Freer Stakes most recently.
