Clear favourite for success after charging home to win the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) at Flemington last time out, Lucia Valentina will have to jump well to find prime position in the 2014 Caulfield Cup from barrier 12.

Claiming five wins and three minor places from her 12 competitive starts to date, Lucia Valentina has returned to racing in career-best form this time in; winning the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) and finishing third in the Group 1 Australian Oaks (2400m) over autumn and returning in spring for a strong win in the Group 1 Tramway Stakes (2400m) and Turnbull triumph.

One of only two other mares confirmed in the final field for the 2014 Caulfield Cup, trainer Donna Logan was on hand to draw Rising Romance’s barrier for this weekend’s feature and was disappointed when selecting the wide barrier 17.

Securing four wins and as many minor places from her 13 appearances on course to date, Rising Romance finished second behind classy stayer Puccini in both the Group 2 Avondale Guineas (2100m) and Group 1 New Zealand Derby (2400m) in her native New Zealand before crossing the ditch for fourth in the Vinery Stud Stakes and a maiden victory at the highest level of racing in the Australian Oaks.

“It’s a chance of a lifetime; we’ve got a very well horse and it’s up to James to sort out the barrier draw,” Donna Logan said after the draw.

“I couldn’t be happier with her, she keeps stepping up every time but she’s yet to prove herself this four-year-old campaign and this is the biggest test of her life.”

Unlucky to finish a close second to Fawkner in the 2013 edition of the Caulfield Cup, Dandino has returned to Australian shores this year to chase Cups success, but will need a lot of luck to overcome the outside barrier 22 this weekend.

Claiming eight wins and a further eleven minors from his 31 competitive starts so far, Dandino progressed to a credible fifth in the Melbourne Cup last year and has returned in similarly strong form this season, particularly over his two most recent starts in finishing second in the American St Leger (2714m) and fourth in the Group 3 September Stakes (2414m).

Jockey Craig Williams partnered Dandino to second in the 2013 Caulfield Cup and is relishing the task of going one better on the Dansili entire on Saturday.

“I’ve been very lucky in the last three years and this year I need to be a little bit more lucky because we’ve drawn a very awkward gate,” Williams said.

“I’m very happy with Dandino this year; I was very happy and very confident with him last year and I will go into the Golden Ale Caulfield Cup this year with the same confidence … most importantly my horse is in really good order.”

Japanese stayers Bande and Admire Rakti were dealt barriers 10 and eight at the 2014 Caulfield Cup gate allocation respectively, pleasing their trainers.

Having returned to racing in exceptional form this year, several parallels have been drawn between Bande’s form line and that of 2006 champion Delta Blues in the lead-up to his successful Australian tenure.

Required to carry a race-high 58kgs, trainer Tomoyuki Umeda said he is confident his runner is in the right form to take out the AU$3 million event.

“His condition is good,” Umeda said following the draw.

“We would like him to run his best.

“The weights are a little bit heavier than we expect but we will just do our best.”
