2014 Caulfield Cup Campaign Confirmed for Text’n Hurley

August 5th, 2014

A standout performer over the late summer and 2014 Autumn Racing Carnival, trainer Colin Little has identified the Group 3 Aurie’s Star Handicap (1200m) at Flemington has the ideal first-up event for Text’n Hurley ahead of a spring racing campaign geared towards the featured Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m).

Overcoming a disappointing run for sixth in the Allan Wicks Fillies Maiden (1200m) first-up on December 26th, the Hard Spun mare quickly found in her rhythm and built towards an unlucky run for second in the Group 3 Schweppervescence Trophy (1600m) and taking out the Group 2 Sunline Stakes (1600m) last time out.

Completing two good barrier trials despite less-than-favourable running conditions at Cranbourne, Little told Racing Victoria he is pleased with Text’n Hurley’s continually building form.

“We were unsure about the ground, it was heavy 10 and I was quite prepared to take Text’n Hurley down there and not trial her because she was in trial 17,” Little said.

“She is a mare that wouldn’t see which way they went over 800m so 1000m was better off.

“She just got back in the trial and just poked around behind them a bit, she wasn’t beaten too far and under the conditions it was all I really wanted her to do.”

Utilizing the Aurie’s Star Handicap as a launch pad for 2007 Cox Plate champion El Segundo over four different spring preparations, Little said connections had decided on the Caulfield Cup as Text’n Hurley’s major target this time in after taking out the Cox Plate with Shamus Award in 2013.

“I always used to start El Segundo in that and I’m not saying she’s El Segundo but it’s a nice start,” Little said.

“Providing that everything’s ok after the trial, we’ll probably open her spring campaign there.

“Some of the owners won the Cox Plate last year, so they have identified the Caulfield Cup as her target.

“We are hoping she can measure up to run in the Caulfield Cup.”

Nominated alongside 14 other possible runners for the 2014 Aurie’s Star Handicap, Text’n Hurley will have to find peak condition early if she is to overcome a field that is set to include the likes of Tiger Tees, Zamorar and Jacquinot Bay.

Yet to be confirmed for a lead-up path towards the 2014 Caulfield Cup, Text’n Hurley is currently available at generous odds of $34 to take out the October 25 feature race with leading online bookie Ladbrokes.com.au.
