Cafe Society Aiming for 2014 Caulfield Cup Qualification

August 1st, 2014

Yet to be guaranteed entry into the major Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) on October 25th this year, soon-to-be Gai Waterhouse-trained stayer Café Society will make a huge leap towards qualification with a positive showing in the Group 3 Coutts Glorious Stakes (2400m) at Goodwood this weekend.

A notable performer under Newmarket-based trainer David Simcock, Café Society was purchased by Waterhouse as a sale in London earlier this year on the eve of an impressive showing for third in the Listed Wolferton Handicap (2000m) at Royal Ascot.

Now under the ownership of a syndicate with hopeful plans of an eventual berth in the featured Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) at some stage, current saddler Simcock said he is continuing to keep the Motivator gelding ticking over, but feels the Coutts Glorious Stakes may figure as a little too competitive at this stage.

“Basically the plan is for him to go to down to Australia for the Spring Carnival. It’s a Group 3 and if he can finish in the first three then he qualifies for certain races down there,” Simcock said.

“The plan is to continue in those sort of races until he goes into quarantine.

“It’s a more competitive race than I would have liked but he’s in good order.

“I’ve been speaking to Gai frequently, and she’s been setting out the criteria that she wants.”

Securing an impressive total of three wins and five minor places from just 10 competitive race starts so far, Café Society has performed well since first debuting on course in the closing stages of 2012, building in class and form on his way to an impressive second in the Neville Childhood Centre Handicap (2400m) in October last year, amongst a classy field that included the likes of Evangelist.

Finishing outside the places just once in three appearances this campaign alone, Café Society is yet to appear in early betting markets for the 2014 Caulfield Cup, but is sure to cause notable ripples should he be successful in the Coutts Glorious Stakes.

A standout performer through the 2014 Autumn Carnival, Australian Oaks champion Rising Romance is currently $13 favourite to take out the 2014 Caulfield Cup with leading online bookie, ahead of Kirramosa, Lucia Valentina and The Offer; currently sharing the second line at $15 odds.
