Winks Hoping to Retain 2014 Caulfield Cup Ride on Our Voodoo Prince

July 25th, 2014

Partnering the rising seven-year-old to three impressive victories from as many starts over a short preparation through autumn, jockey James Winks has conceded he will need to produce his best work to retain the ride on Our Voodoo Prince in the featured Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) on October 18th.

Beginning his racing tenure under the guidance of renowned British trainer Ed Dunlop in early 2011, Our Voodoo Prince was a particularly consistent stayer; rarely finishing outside the places and securing a total of three wins and six minor places from 17 competitive starts.

More than stamping his claims as one to watching with a comfortable victory over Akzar in the Group 3 Easter Cup (2000m) most recently on April 19th, Winks told AAP he is confident of his abilities and continued success in partnering Our Voodoo Prince through the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival, should he be offered the opportunity.

“I’m always happy to get a ride for Chris, he’s a great trainer and you know his horses are in great shape when you get on them,” Group 1 champion Winks said.

“I’d be thrilled to get back on Our Voodoo Prince if the opportunity came my way.”

Offered a first chance to impress trainer Chris Waller further when partnering in-form gelding Fulgur in the Catanach’s Jewellers Handicap (1800m) at Caulfield on Saturday, Winks said he was confident of a successful afternoon.

“Fulgur’s always around the mark but looking on paper, the top weight is the one to beat,” Winks said.

“My bloke is very consistent. I rode him three starts back at Moonee Valley and he didn’t have a lot of luck in a race The Cleaner dominated from the front.”

Yet to be confirmed for a specific path towards the 2014 Caulfield Cup, Our Voodoo Prince is currently available at generous odds of $17 to win the feature race; sharing the third line of betting with La Amistad at leading online bookie

A notable performer through the 2014 Autumn Racing Carnival, Australian Oaks champion Rising Romance has claimed outright favouritism for the Caulfield Cup, currently available at a quote of $13.
