Waller Plots 2014 Caulfield Cup Path for Our Voodoo Prince

July 18th, 2014

Securing a perfect record of three wins from as many starts since arriving in Australia at the conclusion of 2013, trainer Chris Waller has revealed Our Voodoo Prince is likely to begin his run towards the 2014 Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) in Sydney; ideally arriving in Melbourne only a couple of weeks prior to October 18th’s feature.

Beginning his career under renowned European trainer Ed Dunlop, Our Voodoo Prince has secured an impressive total of six race wins and as many minor places from just 20 competitive starts so far.

Claiming outright favouritism in early betting markets for the 2014 Caulfield Cup on the back of his impressive run through his first three Australian appearances, Waller said the Kingmambo gelding will ideally arrive in Melbourne for the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) on October 4th; two weeks prior to his major target.

“He’s in Sydney in work, he’s trialling around the 1st of August and he’s done very well, it’s as simple as that,” Waller told Racing Victoria.

“He’ll have two trials, the second one will be on the 15th of August and he’ll be ready to race probably on the 23rd of August (at the Warwick Stakes meeting at Randwick).

“It’d be nice to think he’s close to being guaranteed a start in the Caulfield Cup, then we can take a weight-for-age path through races like the Chelmsford (Stakes) on the sixth of September over a mile and the Hill Stakes in Sydney, weight-for-age over 2000, on the 20th of September.

“But if he’s struggling to look like he’ll get a start (in the Caulfield Cup) there’s the Naturalism Stakes on the same day in Melbourne and then he’ll probably race in the Turbull on the fourth of October and the Caulfield Cup on the 18th.”

Strolling home to win the Surdex Steel BM85 (1600m) first-up on March 10th, Our Voodoo Prince had to overcome an early deficit to win the Community Race Day Handicap (2000m) on April 5th before more than stamping his claims as one to watch through spring when comfortably finding the line a length in the clear of Akzar in the Group 3 Easter Cup (2000m) last time out.

Having since drifted slightly in betting markets as potential opponents have staked their intentions, Our Voodoo Prince is now available at generous odds of $17 for success in the 2014 Caulfield Cup; sharing the third line of betting with La Amistad at leading online bookie Ladbrokes.com.au.
