Kirramosa to Contest 2014 Caulfield Cup

July 16th, 2014

Unable to take part in the 2014 Sydney Autumn Carnival after chipping a bone in her fetlock over summer, trainer John Sargent is confident of a successful spring campaign for rising four-year-old Kirramosa; outlining the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) and Melbourne Cup will be the major targets.

A standout performer of the 2013 Spring Carnival, Kirramosa won the Macka’s Sand/Soil Supplies CL1 (1200m) in September, and continued to build in form and class on her way to back-to-back victories in the Group 2 Wakeful Stakes (2000m) and Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m) on November 7th.

Drawing inspiration from legendary stallion So You Think’s 2010 season, Sargent said he is yet to confirm a path for Kirramosa through spring, but is pleased with the way she has taken to recovery and early work.

“This happened to So You Think, he missed the autumn of his three-year-old and went down to Melbourne and did everything at the next carnival,” Sargent told Racing Victoria.

“Hopefully she can (too). Dreams are free and you’ve got to live for them otherwise life’s hard…especially when you’re a horse trainer.

“She would have had three-to-four months in the paddock, you can only leave them so long, and she’s a lot stronger now.

“We’re just building her up slowly. She’s doing some swimming and pacework, a bit of everything really.

“I’ll probably maybe get her up to a trial here and then give her 10 days in the paddock and just potter around until the real action starts for the spring.

“She’ll probably have a run or two here first and then aim down for the Cups. It’ll probably be a 1200 and a 1400 and then we’ll go down there over ground.”

Securing an impressive total of four wins and one minor places from just eight competitive race starts, Kirramosa opened her racing career in New Zealand in the 2013 autumn; winning the Fire N Ice Refrigeration 2.y.o Maiden (1200m) before finishing fourth in the Group 1 Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m).
