2013 Caulfield Cup Barrier Draw – Hawkspur Draws 16

October 16th, 2013

Race favourite Hawkspur has drawn wide with barrier 16 in their bid to salute for the punters in Melbourne’s big race on the weekend, the Caulfield Cup 2013 barrier draw conducted live from Thousand Guineas Day today.

Running as Caulfield Race 7 on Saturday, this year’s $2.5 million Group 1 BMW Caulfield Cup (2400m) yesterday drew a capacity field of 18 starters plus four emergencies.

The third emergency, Ibicenco for Peter Moody, was officially scratched this morning.

However a Caulfield Cup barrier was still drawn for Ibicenco today – barrier nine.

Four of those guaranteed a run are from the Sydney stables of Chris Waller, including the pre-barriers $4.40 favourite, available at $8.80 in Ladbrokes.com.au’s exclusive Double The Odds promo, in Caulfield Cup betting Hawkspur

The four-year-old Purrealist gelding vies for their second Group 1 trophy this weekend having saluted in the Queensland Derby as a three-year-old during the winter.

Their veteran hoop Jim Cassidy meanwhile shoots for a century of Group 1 winners having scored 99 Group 1 wins to date, the duo’s task to be made an imposing one if the other three emergencies come out.

If this is the case Hawkspur will move from barrier 16 into gate 14, a barrier which hasn’t produced a Caulfield Cup winner in the past 30 years.

Waller’s other Caulfield Cup hopes had mixed luck with the barriers with:

  • #9 Kelinni ($82 DTO) – Barrier 1 – Fourth in last year’s Melbourne cup and sixth in the Sydney Cup over two miles this year, dour stayer gets up to the 2400m for the first time this prep so expect improvement, hoodoo to overcome however as no Caulfield Cup winner has jumped from the inside alley in the past 30 years
  • #10 Moriarty ($52 DTO) – Barrier 18 – Recent Hill Stakes winner over 2000m at Randwick carrying a hefty 59kg, Brisbane Cup winner over the mile and a half in the winter, most recent run was a credible fifth to Seville in the Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m) on October 5, drawn in last year’s winning barrier 18 but won’t jump from it, already into 17 with Ibicenco out, coming into 15 if the other emergencies also are withdrawn
  • #16 Royal Descent ($17 DTO) – Barrier 3 – ATC Oaks winner from the autumn should get a nice ride here if she can stay out of trouble, jumped from barrier three two back when second in the Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m) and is out to improve on her Turnbull 11th last time out

Sandwiched in between Waller’s dominant duo of Hawkspur and Royal Descent in the Caulfield Cup odds at a quote of $6 ($12 DTO) is then the Marco Botti-trained English raider Dandino.

The veteran stallion was last seen winning the USA St Leger over 2700m at Arlington in mid-August and has drawn awkwardly with gate 19 (into 16 with emergencies out) in their Australian debut this weekend.

Other horses high up the Caulfield Cup odds and their barriers include:

  • #15 Silent Achiever ($18 DTO) – Barrier 5 – New Zealand horseman Roger James’ first Caulfield Cup runner with jockey Glen Boss shooting for his first Caulfield Cup trophy, the O’Reilly mare has Group 1 winning form back home, ran a lovely sixth in the Turnbull beaten only one and a half lengths with step up to 2400m to suit, last time over the distance produced a second behind Fiveandahalfstar in the Group 1 The BMW at Rosehill in April
  • #7 Fawkner ($22 DTO) – Barrier 12 – Sole Caulfield Cup chance for owner Lloyd Williams, they were third in the Turnbull last time out from barrier six and have plenty of class, come into 10 with emergencies out which looks a lovely position for the six-year-old
  • #8 Jet Away ($24 DTO) – Barrier 13 – Jockey Damien Oliver is a four time Group 1 winner of the Caulfield Cup and shoots for his fifth on this David Hayes-trained import who won back-to-back autumn races in their opening prep down under before a seventh in the Turnbull last time out in a run that had plenty of merit
  • #18 Dear Demi ($28 DTO) – Barrier 22 – Will jump from the outside alley which on paper looks bad but Dunaden did it to win last year for the first time in three decades so it is achievable, but she’ll have to be at her best to be the first VRC Oaks winner to return and win a Caulfield Cup – seven before her have tried and failed so it’s a tough ask

Of course the make-up of the Caulfield Cup 2013 barriers will change depending on whether there are any scratchings and if the three emergencies, outside of the already officially withdrawn Ibicenco, gain a run.

Currently the four emergency Caulfield Cup barriers are:

  • #19 Forgotten Voice (Barrier 7) – Regulated to first emergency after sitting equal 18th on the order of entry at acceptance stage yesterday
  • #20 Sneak A Peek (Barrier 17) – Moody’s third acceptor, looking to join the 58kg topweight Manighar in the field for their trainer
  • #21 Ibicenco (Barrier 9) – Officially scratched
  • #22 Oasis Bloom (Barrier 21)

Other interesting 2013 Caulfield Cup Barrier Draw Facts include:

  • The most successful Caulfield Cup barrier in the past 30 years has been nine with five winners which was drawn by the scratched third emergency Ibicenco; if the other three emergencies come out it will be #1 Manighar (currently drawn in 11) who jumps from nine
  • Four barriers haven’t produced a Caulfield Cup winner in the past three decades with 1, 8, 12, 14 – drawn this year by #9 Kelinni (barrier one), #4 Waldpark (barrier eight), #7 Fawkner (barrier 12) and #3 Ethiopia (barrier 14); Kelinni will stay in one regardless but if all the emergencies come out it Barrier 8 will belong to #6 Mr Moet, Barrier 12 to #3 Ethiopia and Barrier 14 to #12 Hawkspur
