Capacity 2013 Caulfield Cup Field Released

October 15th, 2013

A capacity field of 18 starters plus four emergencies has been accepted for the Caulfield Cup 2013, the world’s richest mile and a half handicap to run in Melbourne this Saturday, October 19.

Originally there were 22 final acceptors for this year’s edition of the $2.5 million Group 1 BMW Caulfield Cup (2400m).

The decision of which horse down the bottom of the ballot would make the final cut, and which would be regulated to the position of the first emergency, was down to the Melbourne Racing Club (MRC) today.

Two horses were battling for the spot sitting equal 18th on the order of entry with Nicky Henderson’s UK raider Forgotten Voice and the Gai Waterhouse-trained The Metropolitan runner-up Forgotten Voice.

Waterhouse also had a horse always guaranteed a Caulfield Cup start in last year’s The Metropolitan winner Glencadam Gold, getting in with 55.5kg and Tommy Berry to ride, who has a Turnbull Stakes 14th to improve on.

The other emergencies awaiting a scratching to make the field on Saturday are then the Peter Moody-trained duo of Ibicenco and Sneak A Peek, and in-form Al Maher mare Oasis Bloom.

Moody will also saddle-up his multiple Group 1 winner Manighar in the No. 1 saddlecloth.

Out to improve on their second last finish in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) last start, the Linamix eight-year-old was pushed up to the 58kg topweight after owner Lloyd Williams opted not to accept for previous heavyweights Green Moon and Sea Moon.

Williams and his head trainer Robert Hickmott will still be represented in the Caulfield Cup field 2013 by Fawkner (55kg) who will be ridden by Williams’ godson Nick Hall.

The Reset six-year-old has been in top form over the past year, highlights including their Emirates Stakes second to Happy Trails last spring and their last start third to the same horse in the Turnbull.

Following Manighar in the 2013 Caulfield Cup field and weights are then the likes of Marco Botti’s visiting USA St Leger winner Dandino (56.5kg), the Pat Carey-trained Ethiopia (56.5kg) and Anthony Freedman’s German import Waldpark (56kg).

Sydney’s leading trainer Chris Waller meanwhile will be represented by four livewire chances, including the Caulfield Cup betting favourite Hawkspur.

Purrealist four-year-old Hawkspur ran the ideal Caulfield Cup lead-up when fifth in the Turnbull and looks cherry ripe to salute for the punters on Saturday when they go up to the 2400m for the first time since their Group 1 Queensland Derby win back in June.

Hawkspur will be joined in the Caulfield Cup field then by stable mates Kelinni who was fourth in last year’s Melbourne Cup, recent Hill Stakes winner Moriarty and another top fancy in his ATC Oaks champ Royal Decent.
