Southern Speed Scratched From 2012 Caulfield Cup Field

October 20th, 2012

The 2012 Caulfield Cup field has been finalised for the race today, with Southern Speed officially scratched from the race.

Southern Speed, who won last year’s edition of the Caulfield Cup, was scratched from the field due to her wide barrier draw of 14 in the $2.5 million race.

This scratching has allowed for first emergency Sabrage to be promoted to one of the starting 18 2012 Caulfield Cup runners.

Southern Speed’s co-trainer, Leon Macdonald, revealed that the five-year-old would now be saved for the $3 million Cox Plate at Moonee Valley Racecourse next weekend.

“It was a tough decision, but we have made the call,” Macdonald said.

“There were a few factors, including that no horse has won successive Caulfield Cups since Rising Fast (1954-55) and that no mare has carried a weight similar to hers and won the race for a long time.”

Macdonald insists that Southern Speed currently has no health woes that would have contributed to her scratching from the 2012 Caulfield Cup field.

“I can’t have the mare going any better, she’s fit and well, but we all feel that next week’s Cox Plate might be a more suitable race for her,” he said.

“The Caulfield Cup is the strongest Cup field we have seen for years, but I also acknowledge that the Cox Plate won’t be any easier to win.”

Southern Speed has had a mixed spring campaign so far, winning the Group 2 Makybe Diva Stakes two starts before placing a disappointing 15th of 16 runners in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes last run. are offering a $400 bonus bet to new customers who sign up today and enter the promo code BONUSBET. is your one stop shop for all your betting needs this spring, so ensure you make the most of their premium betting experience.
