2012 Caulfield Cup Final Field

October 16th, 2012

The final field for the Caulfield Cup (2400m), that will be this Saturday at Caulfield Racecourse, has been confirmed.

Twenty-three horses paid the final acceptance fee for the race and it was up to the MRC committee to decide which of the horses locked together in equal 17th on the Caulfield Cup order of entry would receive the final two spots in the field.

In the end the unlucky horse was Sabrage but he is still a chance of running if any of the eighteen confirmed starters are scratched before the race.

French duo Americain and Dunaden are the top weights (58kg) for this year’s Caulfield Cup and are both aiming to join Poseidon (1907), Skipton (1943), Rising Fast (1955) and Viewed (2009) as horses that have won the Caulfield Cup after previously winning the Melbourne Cup (3200m).

They are followed at 55.5kg by fellow international raider Jakkalberry and American-bred stayer Winchester.

The favourite for the 2012 Caulfield Cup is Gai Waterhouse-trained Glencadam Gold.

The imported stayer raced into Caulfield Cup contention with strong wins in the Newcastle Cup (2300m) and Metropolitan Handicap (2400m) and is now priced at odds of $4.50.

He is followed in the betting market by Dunaden and December Draw.

December Draw has been in consistent form this Spring Racing Carnival, finishing third in the Underwood Stakes (1800m) and Turnbull Stakes (2000m), but is untested at 2400m having been injured in last year’s Caulfield Cup.

Peter Moody-trained Lights of Heaven has also been well backed and is joined in the final field by stablemates Sneak A Peek and Voila Ici.

Cups King Bart Cummings is represented by imported stayer Sanagas and is hoping the big German horse can give him an historic eighth Caulfield Cup trophy.

Southern Speed will also make history, if she can become the first mare to win the Caulfield Cup on multiple occasions.

The Southern Image mare beat home just one horse in the Turnbull Stakes (2000m) a fortnight ago but trainers Leon Macdonald and Andrew Gluyas are confident that she can bounce back.

She is one of just five Australia bred horses in the field along with Niwot, Secret Admirer, Alcopop and Moudre.
