Lights of Heaven Back in 2012 Caulfield Cup Contention

September 24th, 2012

Lights of Heaven returned to form with an impressive third place finish behind Lamasery in the Hill Stakes (2000m) at Randwick on Saturday.

The Peter Moody-trained mare is now likely to miss the Metropolitan Handicap (2400m)and  will probably not run again before the 2012 Caulfield Cup that will be run at Caulfield Racecourse on October 20.

“For her I think that would be ideal. A month between runs for the Caulfield Cup and then straight into the Melbourne Cup,” Moody said.

“I think two mile-and-a-half runs going into the Melbourne Cup would be too much for her.”

Lights of Heaven was an early favourite for the Caulfield Cup last year, after winning the Group 1 Australasian Oaks (2008m), but the Zabeel mare failed to find form in the spring and was scratched from the race.

The five-year-old raced into 2012 Caulfield Cup contention with an excellent campaign in the 2012 Queensland Winter Carnival.

Lights of Heaven finished second behind Shez Sensational in the Hollindale Stakes (1800m) at the Gold Coast before finishing second behind Mawingo in the Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m).

She went on to win the Eagle Farm Cup (2200m) and the Brisbane Cup (2400m) to finish as one of the stars of the carnival.

The mare was one of the favourites for the 2012 Caulfield Cup but drifted in betting markets after disappointing performances in the Warwick Stakes (1400m) and Chelmsford Stakes (1600m).

She is currently priced at $26 in the 2012 Caulfield Cup betting market at while she is at odds of $61 in the 2012 Melbourne Cup market.

Lloyd Williams-owned Green Moon is still the favourite in Caulfield Cup betting markets.
