Maher Pair in Must Win Situations to Qualify for 2012 Caulfield Cup

September 19th, 2012

The 2012 Caulfield Cup hopes of Ciaron Maher-trained duo Moudre and Mr O’Ceirin are hanging on a knife edge, with both horses needing to win their next start to secure a run in the race.

Moudre was strongly backed in 2012 Caulfield Cup betting markets after his eye catching third in the Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) in his first race in eighteen months.

However, the result was not enough to get him into the Caulfield Cup field and he will now need to win a ballot-exempt race to gain qualification.

Surprisingly Maher opted not to run him in the Group 3 Naturalism Stakes (2000m) at Caulfield on Saturday but will instead target the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) at Flemington on October 6.

“I don’t think Caulfield is his track. He would get too much weight in the Naturalism and I don’t think 1800m around Caulfield second-up would suit him,” Maher said.

“I think he’s a weight-for-age horse and 2000m at Flemington in the Turnbull is ideal.”

Stablemate Mr O’Ceirin will run in the Naturalism Stakes after narrowly gaining a start.

He will be ridden by leading jockey Glen Boss and Maher believes he will enjoy the extra distance.

“I couldn’t have been happier with his first-up effort in the Heatherlie Handicap. He didn’t have a lot of galloping room and 1700m is as short as he needs it at that level,” Maher said.

Mr O’Ceirin is on the second line of Naturalism Stakes betting behind kiwi mare Zurella.
